Here at Escape Design we realise that not everyone interested in a new website is computer and IT literate...so below we have put together a few of the keywords that will pop up when you are looking into who to choose for your website.

If there are any that we have missed then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Website

A website, is not the same thing as a web page. Though the two terms are often used interchangeably, they should not be. So what's the difference? To put it simply, a website is a collection of web pages. For example, escapedesign.net is a website, but there are lots of web pages that make up a site.

Hosting

This is a computer that acts as a server for other computers on a network. It can be a web server, an e-mail server, an FTP server, etc. For example, a web host is what provides the content of web pages to the computers that access it.

Domain Name

This is the name that identifies a website. For example, "escapedesign.net" is the domain name of Escape Design's website.

E-commerce

E-commerce (electronic-commerce) refers to business over the Internet. Web sites such as Amazon.com, Buy.com, and eBay are all e-commerce sites.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth refers to how much data you can send through a network or modem connection. You can think of bandwidth as a motorway with cars travelling on it. The motorway is the network connection and the cars are the data. The wider the motorway, the more cars can travel on it at one time. Therefore more cars can get to their destinations faster. The same principle applies to computer data -- the more bandwidth, the more information that can be transferred within a given amount of time.

Browser

You are probably using a browser to read this right now. A Web browser, often just called a "browser," is the program people use to access the World Wide Web. It interprets HTML code including text, images, hypertext links, Javascript, and Java applets. After rendering the HTML code, the browser displays a nicely formatted page. Some common browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

HTML

Stands for "Hyper-Text Markup Language." This is the language that Web pages are written in. Also known as hypertext documents, Web pages must conform to the rules of HTML in order to be displayed correctly in a Web browser. The HTML syntax is based on a list of tags that describe the page's format and what is displayed on the Web page.

Flash

When you see Flash on the Web, it most likely refers to Adobe Flash, a multimedia technology. Flash allows Web developers to incorporate animations and interactive content into their websites.

Bespoke

The term "bespoke" comes from England where it originally referred to custom or tailor-made clothing. In recent years, however, the term has been applied to information technology (IT), and refers to custom services or products.

Ok that's all for now, we could sit here and fill pages and pages with these but we only wanted to put the basics here.
